Part 2: The Runaway Lottery Commission - Call to Action

This is a call to action...Let's call the Lottery commission at
919-715-6886 And here's why....

So let's continue on about the Lottery Commission.  High expectations were sold to us.  Money for education.  Come on, buy a ticket...money for education.  Well the commission seems to be more interested in self indulgence than funding our classrooms.

Did you look at the salary increase from last year to this?  Our teachers don't make anything like that and they take care of our most precious jewels.

NC is on the rebound but we're not there yet.  And if  memory serves me correctly, our Governor has requested that all departments decrease their budgets so we could fund higher salaries for teachers. Not increase!

But just last week there was an article on Carolina PlottHound that showed where the lottery director, Alice Garland is proposing a budget that raises spending in several categories.  Lottery Staff will get a raise of 6.25% while advertising for the Lottery will increase 12.9%.And they are celebrating spending more at sporting events, as in 5% more!  Look for more Lottery ads at the Durham Bulls and Carolina Hurricanes.

And if memory serves me correctly again...the commission was bragging about their contribution to Nascar?  Huh?

And this:  Word on the street is someone very close to the commission has leaked info concerning a $60 million slush is hidden by the individuals on the commission.  $60 million?  What are they going to do with it?   Ask your legislator if he/she has heard that.

Let's take a look at who makes up this "special" board.  Per the statute:

§ 18C-111.  Commission membership; appointment; selection of chair; vacancies; removal; meetings; compensation.
(a)        The Commission shall consist of nine members, five of whom shall be appointed by the Governor, two of whom shall be appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, and two of whom shall be appointed by the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Commissioners may be removed by the appointing authority for cause. The Governor shall select the chair of the Commission from among its membership, who shall serve at the pleasure of the Governor.

Remind me please...don't we have a Republican legislature and a Republican Governor?  Then why do we only have 6 Republicans on this board?  Three members are Democrats from the previous administration, if I remember correctly.  So tell me again who put that budget together?  Exactly what do you think the Dems are doing:  stonewalling in hopes 2014 is a successful election for them.  I think it's time to call the troops..ie, our Republican legislators.

The Lottery Commission is set to meet and vote on the proposed budget on Tuesday, June 3rd.  Commissioners should hear from taxpayers that it is not OK to continue to increase spending of money that should be used to help our teachers.  Commissioners can be reached at 919-715-6886. Call and ask Alice why her employees deserve more than those who teach our children!  Let me know what she says!
