Killing Keystone! Know the facts!

Intuitive Commentary by Kirk Smith

Today we learn our United States Senate, lead by the ever competent Senator “Dirty” Harry Reid, voted to kill the Keystone Pipeline!  You know that pipeline bringing Canadian oil to the United States for our refineries and country?  Now this not unexpected, seeing that this United States Senate, lead by the ever competent Senator “Dirty” Harry Reid, who has yet to pass a budget now over 1,000 days!  Remember this is a Senate lead by the ever competent Senator “Dirty” Harry Reid, who also is a member of the Democrat Party!

Well for the lucky to be working masses who already forgot, the national average for a gallon of gasoline was $1.78 when our Dear Leader took office on January 20, 2009.  The Broadway Kangaroo shows a gallon of Regular gasoline is now $3.69!  Yeah, I do enjoy this transformational “hope and change” thing!  Our most high leader has revoked drilling leases in the Gulf of Mexico, placed a moratorium on deep water drilling, has revoked coal mining leases, put off limits our own supply of oil and sent tax dollars to the likes of Brazil so they can develop their own deep water drilling.  He actually bragged about our buying their oil!

Now here in Lee County we are sitting atop a vast natural gas deposit that will certainly improve the financial climate for all of us!  Unfortunately, the forces lead by the “Enviro-Marixts” want nothing to do with any extraction or mining of natural resources that would improve our lives.  No these fanatics would prefer we enjoy higher energy costs.  In the mean time they spread lies and half truths in order to put fear in the uninformed minds.  These myrmidon masses already have stormed Central Carolina Community College President Marchant’s office protesting “fracking.”

Fracking (a pejorative used by the anti-drilling tree huggers) stands for a drilling technique known as “hydraulic fracturing.”   Horizontal drilling along with hydraulic fracturing has gone on for over fifty years in many states and around the world.  In that time they have a system that is environmentally friendly and at the same time provides good paying jobs as well natural gas and oil!

Currently the State government is working to repeal archaic laws making horizontal drilling illegal.  They should move carefully in order to utilize the best practices and safeguards for all involved.

A recent seminar held in Washington featured speakers discussing the use of hydraulic fracturing.  Among the information passed out was a list of questions compiled by the County of Lycoming, in Pennsylvania, that is of interest to us here in Lee County and North Carolina. These are the Five Things a County Commissioner should know or ask:

 1) Who are the companies who want to operate in their county - what is their track record; how do they operate?

2) What are your state agencies doing or planning to do to ensure the proper regulations re in place and will be enforced?

3) How will you work with municipalities in your county with respect to roads, water management, public safety, community education?

4) How will your County Planning Department work with the companies, the state agencies and the municipalities?

5) What can you do to educate your so you can make informed decisions that balance the energy, economic development and your county's citizen needs and concerns?
