Breaking: The Lee BOE Wants More of Your Money..

Note to self:  This isn't breaking news!  This is status quo.  While Dr. Moss cares about the custodians, he lets teacher assistants go and helps pad the principals' wallets with his cohorts on the Board of Education.  You decide if it's really "for the children"!

Board of Education seeks $3.3 million local budget increase

"OUTSOURCING CUSTODIAL SERVICES

The board unanimously approved Monday to keep custodial services for Lee County Schools "in-house" rather than outsourcing.

The board had been mulling the possibility of contracting custodial services to an outside vendor as a potential cost-saving measure and issued a request for proposals in February. In that scenario, the custodians would work for an external agency rather than be employed directly by the school system.

At its initial budget work session in March, the board reviewed four bids, two of which offered the option for custodians currently employed by Lee County Schools to maintain their current wages.

That provision brought the bid from Durham-based SSC Service Solutions to $1.9 million, and the bid from Ameila, Va.-based GCA Education Services to $1.7 million, compared to the $2.1 million Moss said the district currently spends on custodial services.

But Moss and the board members expressed concern about the contractors’ policy that custodians must work 30 hours per week to be considered a full-time employee eligible for benefits, which would be an issue for custodians who are dual-employed as bus drivers, and wouldn't have the 30 custodial hours necessary to receive benefits...."
